Shade Annuals

Green Leaf Begonia
Begonias – These are some of the easiest plants for the shade. Green leaved wax begonias are low maintenance bedding plants in pink, white, or red. Non-stop begonias have large rose shaped flowers and come in many colors, including yellow. Dragon Wing begonias have red & pink drooping flowers and are excellent for hanging baskets. Full to part Shade.

Caladium

Caladium 'White Christmas'
Caladium – Thes tropical bulbs are grown for their striking foliage color. The leaves can be white, red, green & pink and come in a wide variety of interesting patterns. Caladiums are excellent behind shorter flowers like begonias. Full to part shade.

Coleus
Coleus – Coleus doesn’t need to flower b/c the leaves are so pretty. Dozens of varieties are available with every possible pattern of red, gold, green, pink, purple, and orange on the leaves. All types grow happily in the shade and some varieties will tolerate some sun if given plenty of water. Grows 16 to 36 inches tall and wide. Pinch back the stems to encourage the plants to branchout.

Impatiens
Impatiens – America’s favorite flower in the shade. Impatiens are easy to grow plants for shade or part shade. Flowers can be any color but yellow and blue. They do not require dead heading, but can be pinched back in mid summer if the stems grow too long. Excellent for bedding plants or containers. 1 to 2ft tall and wide. Fertilize and water regularly. Attracts hummingbirds.

New Guinea Impatiens
New Guinea Impatiens – These showy cousins of regular impatiens have larger flowers and leaves that can be burgundy or striped with gold. They tolerate more sun that traditional impatiens but still grow best when shaded from the hottest midday sun. New Guinea impatiens grow up to 18 inches tall and need plenty of water. Attracts hummingbirds.

Torenia
Torenia – Torenia have some for the best blue flowers for the shade. A heat tolerant trailing plant that combines well in hanging baskets with impatiens. Plants are easy and fast growing, but do water often. 6 inches tall and up to 2ft wide. Pink, purple and rose varieties are also available.
Sun Annuals

Ageratum
Ageratum- Neat 6 to 10 inch mounds of powder puff blue flowers. Good for the front of the border. Remove spent flowers to encourage more blooms. Full Sun to part shade.
Angelonia- These heat loving plants have upright spikes loaded with small orchid like flowers. Colors are white, pink, lavender, and purple. Grows 24 inches tall and attracts hummingbirds and butterflies. Easy. Full Sun to part shade.
Bacopa – This trailing plant has delicate white or lavender blue blooms. Grows only 2 inches tall and trails 2 feet long. Part sun to part shade.
Blue Daze – this fast growing annual has sky blue flowers and silvery green foliage. It needs to be watered well when first planted, but once established blue daze is very heat tolerant. Grows 6 inches tall and 2 feet wide. Full sun to part sun.
Begonia Bronze leaf – Bronze leaf begonials are some of the easiest and most reliable annuals for full sun. Flowers can be red, pink, or white and the plants grow 8 inches tall and 12 inches wide. Full sun to part sun.
Geraniums – Geraniums have large ball shaped clusters of flowers on tall stems. Bright red is the most popular color, but they also come in rose, pink, white, and lavender. Geraniums need plenty of fertilizer and full to part sun. Remove spent flower clusters at the base of the stem.
Lantana – Lantana are heat loving butterfly magnets. The small flower clusters are produced in great numbers. The solid color varieties are yellow, white, while the bicolor varieties come in yellow-pink, orange-red. Lantana likes full sun and are drought tolerant once established.

Marigolds

Marigold
Marigold – Vibrant flowers in yellow and orange for beds or containers. Flowers can be large and double like pom-poms or small and daisy like. Marigolds love heat and grow quickly, but spent flowers must be removed to keep the plants flowering. Eight inches to 2ft tall, full sun.

Million Bells
Million Bells – Million Bells or Calibrachoa are smaller flowered cousins of the petunia. in the ground they will grow 4 to 6 inches tall and 2 ft wide, but they are mostly effective spilling out of pots and hanging baskets. They come in red, yellow, purple, and pink. the spent flowers fall off by themselves, so they are low maintence. Part Sun.

Pentas
Pentas – Pentas have umbrella-like clusters of star shaped flowers and come in red, pink, white, and lavender. They are extremely heat tolerant and will attract hummingbirds and butterflies. Depending on variety they can grow 8 inches to 2 ft tall. Full sun to part shade.

Wave Petunias
Petunias – These trumpet shaped flowers are excellent for planting in flower beds or trailing out of pots or hanging baskets. Flowers can be striped, or solid colored, an dcome in white, pink, blue, purple and red. Petunias need plenty of water and fertilizer and grow in full sun or partial shade. 8inches tall and up to 3ft wide.

Purslane
Purslane – Nothing is better for hot, dry soil than purslane. Also known as Moss Rose or Portulaca, stays only 4 inches tall and spreads up to 2ft wide. Flowers any color except blue and close blooms in late afternoon.

Salvia
Salvia – This spiky flower is on the best nector plants for hummingbirds and butterflies. Though bright red is the most popular color, salvia also comes in white, pink, blue, and purple. Salvia prefers full sun and is drought tolerant.

Verbena
Verbena – This low growing, spreading plant has clusters of flowers that can almost completely cover the ground. Blooms can be red, white, purple, and pink. Grows as an annual groundcover or trailing out of pots and hanging baskets. Attracts hummingbirds and butterflies. Plant in well drained soil in full sun.

Vinca
Vinca – Vinca or periwinkle is a heat loving plant that grows 10 inches tall and 12 inches wide. The flowers look much like shade impatients, but take full sun. Blooms can be white, pink, red or lavender. Vinca needs soil the has excellent drainage and does not need to be watered often once established.
