Perennials for Sun

Artemisia – An easily grown perennial with feathery textured, silvery foliage that contrasts well with brightly colored flowers like Black Eyed Susans and daylilies. Cut back old foliage in early spring. Silver Mound is a dwarf variety.

Bee Balm – Blooms are red, pink, or purple with very aromatic foliage. Attracts butterflies and hummingbirds. Spreads aggressively.

Black Eyed Susan – Golden yellow blooms with green to dark brown centers will grow in clay soil and withstand drought. Seed heads are attractive to birds. Petals will sometimes be streaked with red or bronze. Plants will re-seed themselves as well as come back from root.

Coreopsis – Most commonly bloom yellow to rose. Heaviest flowering int early summer, but many varieties will rebloom until frost. Varieties like moonbeam and american dreams have lacy, fern-like foliage that is attactive even when the plants are not in flower. Drought tolerant.

Daylily – Hundreds of varieties of daylilies are available in colors ranging from white to deep purple, yellow, pink, orange and red. Some varieties like the golden Stella d’ Oro bloom from late spring until fall. Taller varieties tend to bloom for only a few weeks, but have a greater range of color. They are sturdy and reliable plants that increase each year and tolerate a wide range of soil conditions.

Dianthus – Dainty blooms are often scented and come in numerous shades and color combinations. Some varieties have blue green grass like foliage that is evergreen in the winter. Most are suitable for the front of a border.

Gaura – Airy masses of pink or white butterfly shaped flowers are born on tall stalks that wave in the slightest breeze. Thrieves in dry soil. New foliage has a red tint.

Phlox – Both the spring blooming groundcover and the tall upright summer blooming garden plox come in white, pink, rose and purple. Phlox groundcover blooms 3 to 4 weeks in early spring. Garden Phlox has massed heads of flowers on upright stems and can grow 2 to 4 feet tall.

Coneflower – Also known as Echinacea. This long lasting daisy like bloom attracts butterflies to you garden. They last well as cut flowers and are tall and statly in the garden.

Russian Sage – Flowers blue to purple from early summer to fall. Grows well in poor soil.

Sedum Autumn Joy – Beautiful fall bloomer. This 2ft tall succulent is drought tolerant, and attracts butterflies.

Verbena Homestead Purple – This low growing perennial has fragrant flower clusters of purple. It is free blooming and spreading. Ideal for the front of the border.

Perennials For Shade

Ajuga – Ajuga or bugleweed is a spreading groundcover for shade or partial shade. Ajuga is very hardy and easy to grow.

Astilbe – Fluffy flowers are born above deeply cut fern-like foliage. Flowers are long lasting and come in shades from white to raspberry. Part Shade

Columbine – This spring blooming perennial is easy to grow in partial shade. Dozens of varieties are available in different colors.

Coral Bells – Purple to green leaves add color to the shady landscape even when the plant is not blooming.

Ferns – Add texture to you shade garden. Japanese painted fern gives silvery foliage, while Autumn ferns new growth is orange. Shade to partial shade. Heights vary.

Foxglove – Spectacular bell shaped flowers bloom yellow, pink and white. Bloom time is late spring to early summer.

Hosta – This bold foliage plant is the queen of the southern garden. Leaves can be bluegreen to lime green, many with cream or yellow variegation. They form mounds or clumps and are reliable plants that last for years. Fragrant lavender or white flowers on tall stalks appear in mid-summer. Partial shade to deep shade.

Lenton Rose – Lenton Rose has deep dark green, leathery foliage that feels substantial. The flowers appear in late winter and are white, pink, rose or purple. Shade to part shade.
